William C. Mella, 87, of Ocala, FL, formerly of Torrington, CT, peacefully passed away on Monday, July 9, 2018, at the Ocala Regional Medical Center with his devoted lifetime partner of 49 years, Dennis Dickson, by his side.
Bill was born June 30, 1931, in Torrington, CT, the son of the late Peter and Lena Mella. After graduating from Torrington High School, Bill enlisted in the U.S. Army July 7, 1952, and was honorably discharged June 7, 1954, at the rank of Sergeant. Among his awards and decorations, he received the Korean Service Medal, the United National Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. After his service in the Army, Bill returned to Torrington and was employed by Turner and Seymour Manufacturing, from 1956 until his retirement in 1995. Upon his retirement, he and Dennis moved to Ocala, where they have enjoyed 22 years in the Florida sunshine. A kind and generous man, Bill always put his family first. He will be missed dearly and remembered always.
In addition to Dennis, he is survived by three nieces, one nephew and their families, Donna (Timothy) Smith, Dawn (Kevin) Becker, Darlene (Shawn) Carter, Lewis Wheeler, Jr., several cousins and many friends. He was preceded in death by his sister, June Wheeler.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 16, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at Cook Funeral Home Chapel, 82 Litchfield St., Torrington. Burial will follow at St. Francis New Cemetery with full military honors accorded. Relatives and friends may call on Sunday, July 15, 2018, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Cook Funeral Home.
