Thomas A. Johnston, born on August 21, 1937, in Yonkers, New York, passed away on April 28, 2024, at Valerie Manor in Torrington, Connecticut. He was the beloved son of the late Joseph and Martha (Walters) Johnston.
Tom led a fulfilling life characterized by dedication and skill. He worked diligently as a Tool and Die Maker at the Torrington Company, Connecticut Electric and Switch in Bantam, and later retired from Torrington Ford. His craftsmanship extended beyond the workplace as he excelled in various areas such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, autobody repairs, and auto mechanics.
In his youth, Tom displayed a vibrant spirit by engaging in activities like skiing, speed skating competitions, sailing, and serving as a waterfront director at Camp Workcoeman on West Hill Pond. Throughout the years, he cultivated several hobbies that brought him joy. Tom was actively involved in the GEARS RC car club and was an enthusiastic member of the Balsa Bandits RC plane club. His fondness for RC planes, cars, and boats showcased his passion for craftsmanship and innovation.
Aside from his professional accomplishments and hobbies, Tom had a penchant for attending NASCAR races at both local tracks and national venues.
Tom is survived by his loving children Kenneth Johnston and his wife Wendi of Torrington, CT, Jeanne Perrerria of Torrington, CT; his sister Janet Wessels and her husband Herman of Enfield, CT; along with several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him.
In addition to his family ties, Tom was a former member of the Masons where he contributed to community service initiatives with dedication and commitment.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Cook Funeral Home, 82 Litchfield St., Torrington, CT. Burial will be private.
