Salvatore Angelo Ponzi, 93, of 765 Main St., Torrington, CT, died Saturday, February 4, 2017, peacefully at his home with his best friend and son by his side. Born April 11, 1923, in Torrington, he was the son of the late August and Anna (Capuano) Ponzi. He was married to the love of his life, Rita (Fabiashi) Ponzi for fifty eight years before her passing in January 2007.
Sam was considered a great athlete. He lettered in basketball and baseball at Torrington High School and in 1998, he was inducted into the THS Athletic Hall of Fame.
Upon graduation, he entered the U.S. Navy where he joined the Pacific Campaign as a gunner’s mate aboard the destroyer, USS Kalk. He was honorably discharged at the end of World War II and returned home to Torrington.
Sam was employed as a machinist for over thirty five years at the Broad St. Plant for the Torrington Company. After his retirement, he enjoyed over thirty years of playing golf and watching his beloved NY Yankee’s, Boston Celtic’s and UCONN Huskies basketball.
Sam was a lifelong member of the St. Peter Holy Name Society, Torrington Elks Lodge as well as his beloved Triangle Club. He was a communicant of St. Peter Church and was very devoted to his Catholic faith.
Sam is survived by his daughter, Trisha Fox of Del Ray Beach, FL; two sons, Robert and wife, Debra Ponzi of New Hartford, CT, and Philip and wife, Keri Ponzi of Torrington, CT; and his two “boys”, grandchildren, Nicholas and Noah Ponzi. He cherished his “boys” dearly and loved to spend time with them as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his two sisters, Ann Silano and Sister Florence Rinaldi.
Funeral Services will be held on FRIDAY , February 10, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter Church, 107 East Main St., Torrington. Burial will follow at St. Francis New Cemetery with full military honors accorded. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, February 8, 2017, from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Cook Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter/St. Francis School, 360 Prospect St., Torrington, CT 06790.
