Paul J. Dmytryck, age 78, passed away on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at Valerie Manor, in Torrington, CT, surrounded but his loving family and friends after a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease. He was the husband of Lea (Toto) Dmytryck for 53 years.
Paul was born in Millis, MA on August 28, 1935, the son of the late Stephen Dmytryck and the late Evelyn (Lindahl) Dmytryck. He grew up in Millis, MA and graduated from Millis High School in 1954. He continued his education by attending Boston College, graduating in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. After moving to Torrington, CT in 1964, Paul continued his studies and was awarded a Master in Business Administration Degree from the University of Hartford.
Paul was a First Lieutenant in US Army serving from 1958 – 1961 as the Commander of the EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal) Unit at Fort Niagara in Youngstown, NY. Later, he spent 25 years at Hartford Hospital as the Director of Management Engineering until his retirement in 1997.
In 1966, Paul started a part time painting and decorating company, which continues successfully today with his son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Gianna, at the helm. Helping to ‘beautify the NW corner’ was Paul’s goal!
Paul spent his spare time doing projects around his home and reveling in his passion for his family, which grew as his family grew. He was also involved in area Community Theater and could often be seen backstage with a hammer or paintbrush.
His devotion to his faith was a touchstone for Paul. A communicant of St. Thomas of Villanova Church in Goshen, Paul served as an usher and was a 4 th degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 13128.
Besides his beloved wife, Lea, of 53 years, Paul leaves a son, Stephen Dmytryck and his wife Gianna of Torrington, two daughters, Paula Wiley of Harwich, MA and Leanne Dmytryck, a sister, Helen Goodwin of Millis, MA, his treasured grandchildren, Jeremy Wiley, Lea Milton, Jessica Milton and Gabriel Dmytryck who brought him much joy and pride and several nieces and nephews.
Paul was pre-deceased by his two brothers, Edward Dmytryck of Bourne, MA and Donald Dmytryck of Millis, MA. An infant son, Paul J. Dmytryck, Jr. of Torrington, CT, also predeceased him.
His loving family and many friends will remember Paul for his loving spirit, his devotion and loyalty and especially for his humor and wit!
The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the many caregivers who took such incredible care of him over the past 3 – 4 years, especially to Dee Bascetta whose love and care made his illness not an impediment to his enjoying life and having fun!
A special thank you to the staff at Valerie Manor who became, in a very short time, more than caregivers – they are ‘friends who cared’!
