Mary Scott Blackmon, known to all her friends and family as Scott, of Charleston, SC and Litchfield CT, passed away on Friday, July 8, 2022, at the age of 75.
Born on October 6, 1946, in Charleston, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Mary Louise (Ashley) Simpson and the late Loderick Kenna Simpson who settled their family in North Augusta, SC.
Besides her parents, Scott was preceded in death by her life’s love, Daniel Edwin Kulbarsh, Jr, whom she met in 2001.
Scott is survived by a brother, David O. (Jeanette) Simpson of Lincolnton, GA, an extensive “adopted” family established through loving and strong relationships, as well as innumerable friends.
Scott was a 1968 graduate from the School of Nursing at the University of South Carolina. She went on to get her master’s degree in Personnel Management and Supervision from Central Michigan University in 1977. She worked at the Medical University of South Carolina her entire career in numerous positions to include head nurse, assistant director of nursing/staff development, assistant director of nursing in critical care, hospital information system coordinator, and director of patient admissions/financial counseling/bed control. Scott was an active member of several committees and organizations including the MUSC Bone Marrow Transplant Team, the National League for Nursing, the American Hospital Association, the American Society for Nursing Services Administrators, the South Carolina Hospital Association Society for Educators, the Trident Association of Continuing Health Education and Training, and a charter member of the Gamma Omicron Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau.
After retirement, with Dan by her side, Scott lived life to its fullest. She loved to walk, travel, and socialize with her many friends. She shared memories of special patients in her life, some of whom she maintained lifelong friendships with. She also enjoyed the simple things like watching a good crime show, cheering on various sports teams, or sitting down to share a drink and make memories with loved ones.
