Marietta (Scarpa) Romanczuk, 74, of Torrington, died peacefully at her home on February 9, 2016, after a six-year courageous battle with corticobasal degeneration (CBD), a very rare neurodegenerative brain disease. She was the beloved wife of Frank Romanczuk for nearly thirty-eight years.
Marietta was born on November 6, 1941, in Derby, CT, to the late Daniel Scarpa and Ida (DeRosa) Scarpa. Marietta was a graduate of Shelton High School and the Fones School of Dental Hygiene at the University of Bridgeport with a degree in dental hygiene. She served as social chairman of her class and was a member of Phi Omega Upsilon, a dental hygienist’s sorority. Before illness robbed her of the ability to work, Marietta was a dental hygienist extraordinaire, due not only to her mastery of dental hygiene skills but, most importantly, the genuine love and caring she showed her loyal patients over her nearly 40-year career, with most of those years of service spent at the former practice of Dr. George T. Carofino, DDS, in Litchfield, CT.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her loving children: a son, Daniel Fisher and his wife Laurie of Torrington, CT; two daughters, Maria (Fisher) Wood and her husband Tom of Portsmouth, RI, and Kristina (Fisher) Keegan and her husband Gil of West Hartford, CT; two step-daughters, Alison Carey and her husband Alex of Naugatuck, CT and Stephanie Romanczuk of Torrington, CT; and her cherished grandchildren: Andrew and Abigail Fisher, Olivia, Ruthie and Tommy Wood, Teddy, William and Cole Keegan, Alexander and Ariel Carey and Matthew Walukiewicz. She also leaves behind her younger sister, Regina Scarpa of Torrington, CT, with whom she had a very special relationship, as well as many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her step-daughter, Regina Romanczuk.
Marietta enjoyed cooking and baking for her family and friends and traveling throughout the country with her husband, but nothing made her happier than the time she spent with her grandchildren, who she showered with endless love and affection. She was a blessing to all who knew her and they will never forget the individual and special ways she touched their lives.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, February 11, 2016, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Cook Funeral Home, 82 Litchfield St., Torrington. Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 12, 2016, with the cortege leaving at 9:30 a.m. from Cook Funeral Home to St. Anthony of Padua Church, 49 South St., Litchfield, CT for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery.
