John Paul Savulak, 82, of New Hartford, CT, beloved husband of Beverly (Fisher) Savulak for 51 years, died on January 10, 2019, at UConn Health after courageous battles with kidney disease, CHF, diabetes and lymphoma.
John was born in Pittsburgh, PA, to John Henry and Agnes (Koval) Savulak on November 19, 1936. A member of the US Army Reserves, John worked as an underwriter for 33 years at Aetna Life and Casualty. That preceded a second career at Girl Scouts of America. A 1960 graduate of Duquesne University, John was a master woodworker and clockmaker. He faithfully served Hartford Archdiocesan parishes as lector and finance council adviser, last at St. Mary Church in Torrington where he was awarded the St. Joseph Medal of Appreciation.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Dr. Susan Savulak and her husband Dr. Kevin Dieckhaus of Southington and their children, Matthew of New Haven and Andrew and his wife Lauren of Alexandria, Virginia; his son Stephen and his wife Joy (Bianchi) of Woodbury and their children Katherine, Samantha, and William; his sister, Mary Anne Schirra of Pittsburgh, PA, and two nieces, Jennifer and Jacqueline.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 16, 2019, with the cortege leaving at 10:30 a.m. from Cook Funeral Home, 82 Litchfield St., Torrington, to St. Francis of Assisi Church (St. John Paul the Great Parish), 160 Main St., Torrington, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Entombment will follow at St. Peter Mausoleum with full military honors accorded. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, January 15, 2019, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
