Gertrude "Gert" (Marquis) Schlapfer

July 8, 1938 — October 15, 2020

Torrington, CT

Gertrude (Gert) Schlapfer of Torrington, went home to the Lord October 15, 2020.  She passed peacefully at home with her family by her side.  She was 82.

Gert was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.  She loved nothing more than having her family around her so she could dote on them.  Her family meant the world to her and she always made sure times together were special.

Gert was born on July 8, 1938, in Winsted.  She was the daughter of Albert and Adela Marquis.  Gert was one of ten children in the Marquis household.  She graduated from Gilbert High School and worked in the Simsbury tobacco fields and Hitchcock Chair.  However, the job she loved the most and dedicated her life to was being a wife and mother.  If you would have asked her, she would have said that she would not consider that a job but a passion and her greatest accomplishment.

On November 17, 1960, Gert married Rene Schlapfer of Torrington.  Together they raised two sons, David and Kevin.  Gert and Rene enjoyed Sunday drives with the boys when they were young, card games with family and friends, road trips throughout the New England states, cruises to the Caribbean and Mediterranean, and of course, countless trips to the casinos.

Gert is predeceased by her husband Rene, her son David, her parents, and her sisters Laurette Whitman, Jeanette Peck, and Noella Spurdal and her brother Albert Marquis.

She is survived by her son Kevin, his wife Julie, and their son Alex of Torrington, her daughter-in-lw Michelle and her sons Jacob and Adam of Wethersfield, sisters Yolanda Stavnitsky of Winsted, Claire Nelson of New Hartford, Yvonne LaMere of Torrington, brothers Roland Marquis and Robert Marquis both of Torrington, Gert’s beloved sister-in-law Jean Schlapfer of Torrington, 23 nieces and nephews, and her extended family and friends.

We wish to thank Foothills VNA / Hospice specifically, Anne, Ella, Lisa, Kim, and Linda for providing mom with superior comfort care.  Their expertise and attention to detail during this difficult time brought peace of mind not only to mom but our family as well.

Visitation will be at Cook Funeral Home, 82 Litchfield St., Torrington, Friday, October 23, 2020, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery, 76 Walnut St., Torrington, Oct. 24, 2020 at 10:00 a.m.  Relatives and friends attending funeral services are reminded that CDC recommendations for COVID prevention must be followed, social distancing and wearing face masks.
