Eugene “Gene” F. Diorio, 93, a lifelong resident of Torrington, CT, passed away, Friday, December 23, 2016, at Litchfield Woods surrounded by his family. He was the husband of the late Mary (Marcella) Diorio for 55 years.
Gene was born November 17, 1923, in Torrington, CT, son of the late Anthony and Marianna (Porreca) Diorio. He served his country with the US Army during World War II. A recipient of the Purple Heart, Pvt. Diorio was twice wounded in action during WWII (1943-1945) once at Cassino and again at Anzio near Rome while fighting with the US Army 34th Division on the Italian Front.
He was employed by the United States Postal Service, retiring as a Postal Supervisor, and also was a property appraiser, employed by Oles and Jerram. He was a lifetime member of the Elk’s Lodge #372, UNICO, St. Peter Holy Name Society, and was also a lifetime communicant of St. Peter Church. He loved to travel, especially to Italy, loved spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren, and enjoyed listening to classical music and opera.
He is survived by two daughters, Lauren Burinskas of Dallas, TX, Jeanne Griffin and husband Michael of Torrington; one sister, Edith Lupucy of Torrington; one brother, Anthony Diorio, Jr. (Mary Jo) of Enfield, CT; four grandchildren, Dr. Tania Burinskas of Baltimore, MD, Justin Griffin of Torrington, Taylor Griffin of Norwalk, Michael Griffin of Torrington; two great grandchildren, as well as several beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Gene was predeceased by his sister Ann Colaciello.
The family would like to thank the staff at Litchfield Woods for their compassion and many kindnesses shown to Gene during his stay.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 29, 2016, with the cortege leaving at 10:00 a.m. from Cook Funeral Home, 82 Litchfield St., Torrington, to St. Peter Church, 107 East Main St., Torrington, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Francis New Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call on Wednesday, December 28, 2016, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Cook Funeral Home.
