Elizabeth “Liz” Ann (Schellinger) Phelan, 82, of Torrington, CT, passed away Friday, May 20, 2016, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital. She was born May 23, 1933, in Flint, Michigan, the youngest of three children of Dorothy (Pohrt) and Theodore Schellinger.
After graduating high school, Elizabeth met her husband. They married on July 19, 1952, and shortly thereafter began their family. While her spouse completed his education and worked as an engineer, Elizabeth focused her attention toward their home and four children. She lived simply and dedicated her life to taking care of her husband, her children and later, her grandchildren. She will be remembered most for her cheerful nature, friendliness, selflessness, and her virtues of patience and compassion and will be dearly missed.
Elizabeth regularly donated plasma as part of her commitment to participate in research for maternal-fetal medicine. She periodically assisted with charitable work for the March of Dimes, the Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts of America, as well as within organizations of her Roman Catholic church.
Elisabeth loved to bake and there was rarely a dinner that wasn’t followed by a homemade dessert. She was creative and had a known love of drawing, painting, and also knitting and other needlework. She regularly played board games with her family and supported the educational and recreational activities of her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her four children: Colleen Phelan of Decatur, GA; Gayle Phelan of Torrington, CT; Terry Konsko of Chalfont, PA; and Diane Yeomans of Morgantown, PA as well as six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Elizabeth is predeceased by her husband of 60 years, James Richard Phelan, her siblings, Richard “Dick” Schellinger and Maree Yoder.
