Edward J. Asklar, cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington, CT. He was 94 years old and is survived by his beloved wife, Lois (Meyer) Asklar, with whom he shared 70 wonderful years of marriage.
Born on February 13, 1930, in Torrington, CT, Ed was the son of the late Adam and Mary (Tycienski) Asklar. His life was marked by compassion, dedication, and a strong sense of duty, values that he held dear as he honorably served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict.
After returning from military service, Ed joined The Torrington Company, where he dedicated many years of hard work and loyalty, ultimately retiring in 1993 as a Foreman. He was a respected figure in the workforce and maintained lifelong friendships with his colleagues. Ed also held the strong bonds of community close to his heart, being a life member of the Torrington Elks Lodge #372 and enjoying many years as a member of the Torrington Company Foreman’s Club and the Sullivan Senior Center.
An avid lover of both golf and snow skiing, Ed was known for his adventurous spirit, continuing to ski into his 80s—a testament to his zest for life. He and Lois shared a passion for travel, creating lasting memories together in numerous countries. Among their most memorable adventures were an exhilarating safari in Africa and explorations of ancient tombs in Egypt, thirteen countries in Europe and numerous countries Asia.
Edward is grieved by his surviving family, including his son, Mark Asklar and his wife Teresa of Goshen, CT, and his daughter, Heidi Vesentin of Milldale, CT. He was a proud grandfather to three grandchildren and a great-grandfather to three great-grandchildren, in addition to being remembered fondly by several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, preceding him in death were his son, Drake Asklar, his brother, Francis Asklar, and his sister, Theresa Bailey.
The legacy of Edward J. Asklar will forever be cherished by those who loved him and knew him well. His warmth, humor, and unwavering support for family and friends will be deeply missed.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 16, 2025, with the cortege leaving at 10:30 a.m. from Cook Funeral Home, 82 Litchfield St., Torrington, to St. Peter Church (St. John Paul the Great Parish), 99 East Main St., Torrington, CT, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Peter Cemetery with full military honors accorded. Friends and relatives are invited to call on Thursday morning from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at Cook Funeral Home.
