Eda Spino Sullivan passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 10, 2020 at the Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, surrounded by her loved ones, at the age of 97. Her wish to live independently in her home of 63 years was realized prior to her hospital stay of two days.
Eda was born on August 14, 1923 in Torrington, CT, daughter of Nicholas and Rose Andria Spino and the seventh of ten children. She graduated from Torrington High School Class of 1942 and was proud to be voted neatest in her class - a trait she carried throughout her life.
She married Edward E. Sullivan, Torrington’s first Director of Services for the Elderly, on February 5, 1944. He predeceased her on July 25, 1980.
Eda was the Clerk of the Torrington Probate Court for 25 years. She was honored with the Liberty Bell Award by the Litchfield County Bar Association. The recognition, presented to a non-lawyer, acknowledges outstanding community service of an individual who has fostered a better understanding and appreciation of the rule of law.
Eda loved women’s basketball and attended UCONN women’s home and away games, including Final Four Tournaments, well into her eighties. She continued to watch the games on TV and followed the UCONN players’ professional careers. She enjoyed the WNBA finals the week of her passing and wondered if Sue Bird would play next year when she is 40!
She is survived by her daughters, Sheila Hubbard and husband John of Torrington and Nancy Hodkoski and husband Donald of Goshen, grandchildren, Jonathan Gyurko and wife Donna of Brooklyn, NY, Elizabeth Gyurko of Litchfield, CT, Jessica Hubbard and husband Matthew Burger of New York, NY and Matthew Gyurko and wife Erin of Fairfield, CT and her great grandchildren William and Robert Gyurko, Joseph Botelho and Riley Gyurko. She loved them all dearly.
Eda is also survived by her sisters-in-law Louise Spino, Rita Spino and Geri Spino, and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by four brothers, Lawrence, Ralph, Alfred (Sonny) and Roland Spino, and five sisters, Vinnie DiPippo, Connie Boldt, Helen Troccolo, Mary Sokolik and Inez Ocain.
The family is grateful for the compassionate care she received by the staff of Charlotte Hungerford Hospital.
