Dr. James B. Griffin passed away on Friday January 6, 2023, in Waterbury, Connecticut surrounded by his family. James was born in Waterbury, Connecticut on March 10, 1925, the son of the late James B. and Katherine M. (Keough) Griffin. He graduated from Cheshire Academy in Cheshire, Connecticut. He received his undergraduate education at Fordham University and Cornell University. He received a Masters Degree in Education at the University of Hartford and his Doctorate Degree in Dental Surgery at the University of Maryland Dental School in Baltimore Maryland. Following graduation, he served a General Internship at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford, Connecticut and in addition was a resident in Maxillo-Facial surgery at the same institution.
Dr. Griffin came to Torrington, Connecticut in 1950 and served on the hospital staffs of Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, Sharon Hospital, Winsted Hospital and St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center. He served for many years as a volunteer in the Patient Advocacy Program in the Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital and St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut. He was a member in the American Horse Showing Association and the Civil War Roundtable of Northwestern Connecticut. James was a member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillo-facial Surgery and the Connecticut Society of Oral-Maxillo-facial Surgery. He enlisted and served in the United State Navy in World War II.
Dr. Griffin was preceded in death by his wife Mary Keefe Griffin, his sister Katherine M. Leeds and his brother Walter Griffin. He is survived by his son Attorney Paul R. Griffin of New Hartford, Connecticut, his daughter Mary Ann Dudley (Stephen) of Guilford, Connecticut, his son Dr. James B. Griffin and Dr. Lourdes Griffin of Annapolis Maryland and his son Attorney Mark F. Griffin (Elaine) of Southbury, Connecticut. James is also survived by eight grandchildren: Katherine Ann Dudley Levitt (Matthew), Anne Griffin Dudley Peterson (Eric), Pamela Leete Dudley (Craig Collins), Christopher Michael Griffin (Lyndsey), James Bryan Griffin (Sarah Richards), Meaghan Griffin Aliapoulios (Christopher) Patricia Griffin Seaver (Kyle), and Jacqueline Griffin and six great grandchildren: Riley Claire Levitt, Audrey Elizabeth Peterson & Caroline Grace Peterson, Ada Charlotte Griffin & Emma Lourdes Griffin and Nathaniel James Aliapoulios as well as several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be on January 12, 2023, with the cortege leaving at 10:30 a.m. from Cook Funeral Home, 82 Litchfield Street, Torrington, CT to St. Francis Church (St. John Paul the Great Parish) 160 Main Street, Torrington for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Family and friends may gather Thursday morning January 12, 2023, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Cook Funeral Home. Burial Services will be private. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. John Paul the Great Parish, 160 Main Street Torrington, Connecticut 06790.
