Charles Alexander “Ajax” Constable, 82, of Winsted, CT, peacefully passed away Tuesday, September 1, 2015, at his residence surrounded by his family. He was the beloved husband and best friend of Marlene (Zordan) Constable for 58 years.
Ajax was born September 12, 1932, in Torrington, CT, son of the late (former Torrington City Clerk), Alexander Graham Constable and Anna (Schott) Constable. He served his country with the US Army, enlisting on February 16, 1953 and was honorably discharged on December 15, 1954. Among the awards and decorations he received was the National Defense Service Medal. Early in his career, Ajax was employed by the Torrington Park and Recreation Department for 15 years, where one of his first responsibilities there was being an Elf in Santa’s Toy Shop at Christmas Village. He was then employed by the Torrington Housing Authority as their Maintenance Director, retiring after 32 years. He loved sports, especially baseball, basketball, bowling and golf. He was an avid NY Yankee fan and enjoyed attending some of their games and also enjoyed playing baseball for the Torrington Twilight League for many years. One of his most memorable personal sports moments was making the only hit in Frank “Spec” Shea’s Major League All-Star game, with an in-the-park home run at Fuessenich Park off of a pitch by Dick Donovan of the White Sox on October 12, 1956. He continued his love for Baseball by being an Umpire and a member of the Umpire’s Association. Ajax was a faithful fan of the UConn men and women's basketball teams. He was a member of the Eastwoods Country Club, where he enjoyed golfing with friends in their Senior League. He was an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus, and was a Past Grand Knight.
In addition to his wife Marlene, he is survived by a son, Charles “Chuck” Constable of Torrington, and a daughter, Charlene Constable and her partner Jon Starr of South Windsor, CT; two sisters, Mary DiBernardi of Torrington and Anne Chagnot and her husband Robert of Boston, MA; and brother-in-laws, Aldo Zordan and Leo Zordan and his wife Elizabeth, as well as many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
