Torrington

Much loved Bennett Ungar, known as Ben, born August 8, 1955, died June 22, 2018, at age 62 of colon cancer.

Ben was born in the Bronx, New York City to Harold and Shirley Ungar.  He leaves behind spouse, Maureen Ungar; four beautiful children, Jennifer Hull, Stephen Ungar, Adama Ungar and Shaina Ungar.  Ben also leaves behind his father, Harold Ungar; brothers, David and Stuart Ungar;  grandchildren, Jessica, Dameon, Kirstin, Collin and Izabella and was pre-deceased by granddaughter, Raven Hull.  Ben was very close to Uncle Morris Eisenberg, cousin Sandra Samuels, sister-in-law, Joyce Downes and brother-in-law, Douglas Downes.  Ben counted on his wonderful friends, Ray, Dan, Frank (deceased), Rob, Alex and Danny.  Raised in Norwalk, then Wilton, CT, Ben was on the school’s track, wrestling and football teams.  Ben met his wife Maureen at Western Connecticut State College.

Ben worked alongside of and then took over father, Harold’s family flooring business until illness made Ben retire early.  Ben was artistic and creative in watercolor painting, pottery, and stained glass.  His hobbies were salt and freshwater aquarium keeping, organic gardening, chicken farming, fishing, and ethical bow-hunting.  Ben belonged to Algonquin Archers of Woodbury, CT, whose members taught him how to shoot.  To family, Ben was a “Doctor Doolittle”  for the eclectic pets he owned over the years, which included cockatiels, ducks, dogs and a piranha.

Ben was infamous for  “dad” humor and the culinary failures , “Cheerios Meatloaf” and banana “Rat-gut Muffins”.  Ben considered times spent with children, wife, grandchildren and extended family the most important of any day.  Ben enjoyed bow - hunting excursions to Canada, Wyoming and Nova Scotia where experiencing nature was the meaningful part of his trip.

A memorial service for Bennett Ungar will be held on Wednesday, June 27, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at Cook Funeral Home Chapel, 82 Litchfield St., Torrington.  His final resting place will be at Hillside Cemetery, Thomaston, CT, a small town he found much happiness in.  Burial to follow Memorial Service.
