Anthony J. “Tony” Basso, 88, of Torrington, Connecticut, passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2015, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Dora (Cattero) Basso for 64 years.
Tony was born March 20, 1927, in Torrington, CT, son of the late Bartholomew “Barney” and Katherine (Sabia) Basso. He served his country with the US Navy during World War II. Upon his honorable discharge in April of 1946, he was awarded the American Area Campaign Ribbon and the WWII Victory Ribbon. A graduate of UCONN, he was the Administrator for local highway and bridge design employed as a Professional Civil Engineer by the State of Connecticut until his retirement.
Tony was a member of the Elk’s #372, the V.F.W., Sullivan’s Senior Center, and was a communicant of St. Peter Church. He enjoyed his Rhode Island home, the beach, fishing, UCONN Basketball, and spending time with his family, especially his grandson.
In addition to his wife Dora, he is survived by two sons, Anthony Basso, II, and his wife Amy of Wolcott, Mark Basso of Torrington; one daughter, Doreen Brenner of Torrington, and his grandson, Matthew Brenner. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, David Brenner.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 22, 2015, with the cortege leaving at 10:30 a.m. from Cook Funeral Home, 82 Litchfield St. Torrington to St. Peter Church, 107 East Main St. Torrington for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Francis New Cemetery with full military honors accorded. Relatives and friends may call on Friday morning, May 22nd from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Cook Funeral Home.
