Anthony G. Gioia Sr., 91, of Torrington, CT, passed away November 1, 2022, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital. He was the devoted husband of the late Bernice (Rogozinski) Gioia.
Tony was born October 8, 1931, in Torrington, CT, the son of the late James and Rose (Famiglietti) Gioia. He served his country with the US Navy, during the Korean conflict. He was employed by the Social Security Administration and then later by the State of Connecticut with the Lottery Commission until his retirement. Additionally, Tony had owned and operated a local ice cream shop with his family. Tony also coached various youth baseball and basketball teams for many years and volunteered his time to various local non-profit organizations. He was a devoted Mets fan, an avid fisherman, lover of all animals (especially dogs) and an American history enthusiast.
A devoted father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother, he is survived by five children, Nancy Claire (Edward) of Haddonfield, NJ, Anthony Gioia, Jr (Paula) of Torrington, CT, Jodie Gioia (Lisa) of Sacramento, CA, Paul Gioia (Kim) of New Fairfield, CT, David Gioia of Daytona, FL; eleven grandchildren, Adam and Mary Claire, Alex, Brad, Nicholas , Sam, Daniel, Ben, Michael, John and Jacob Gioia; two great grandchildren, Eloise and Owen; three sisters, Rose Marie Jannsen of Torrington, CT, Lorraine Nedergaard of Maitland, FL, Lynn Hayes of Torrington, CT, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2022, from 12:00 noon until 3:00 p.m. at Cook Funeral Home, 82 Litchfield St., Torrington, CT. Burial will be private.
